So
Jordan & I are gearing up for our 5th annual February trip to California
together and I am beyond excited! We've both managed to get a whole week off
from work, so we'll head out Monday to San Francisco where we'll stay until
Thursday morning before we head to Los Angeles for the reason we head to
California every year - a Greek folk dance competition.
Growing up in the US as a Greek-American everything related to our culture
revolves around the church...Greek school, youth groups, dance groups. Two or
three times a year, in various states, youth group sports events and Greek folk
dance events occur. When we were younger, Jordan & I participated in our
parish youth and dance groups and as we've gotten older, our love for the
culture has deepened, so this is a way to stay connected to other Greeks all
over the US. It keeps the culture and traditions alive since we're all so far
from the motherland! ;-)
The first time I went with him, in 2008, I was blown away. It was a three-day non-stop Greek dance whirlwind. As the years went on, I started meeting more and more people and enjoyed the experience even more. Now, we have friends literally all over the states and it's so great to be able to meet up at these competition/events a couple times a year and have fun!
Two years ago, Jordan suggested we fly out a few days early and do something for me - so of course, I chose L.A. I'd never been and I wanted to do as many touristy things as we could bang out in a day. Thankfully, Jordan is such a good sport and truly loves doing touristy things too. We rented a car and drove as close as we could get to the Hollywood sign, walked up and down the Walk of Fame, went into Madam Toussad's, drove down Rodeo Drive, and my sweet man even drove around Beverly Hills to find me a Sprinkles Cupcake Bakery. I'd heard about it, and how they had the most delicious red velvet cupcakes, and I just had to try one. The line was out the door, which enticed us more...and when that cupcake was finally in my hands...I was in heaven. It was every bit as divine as I heard it was! I think I need one now!
Last year, we flew out early and stayed with a friend in San Francisco. Our friend was kind enough to lend us his car one night, so we had a little date night in SanFran, which was really nice! The next day, we walked across the Golden Gate bridge (I, in my high-heeled boots...I swear I'm not that girl!) and drove through Fisherman's Wharf and other parts of the city. Then we went bar hopping; it was "Strong Beer Month" or something like that...so we had a nice dose of strong beers ;o) and then went to the mall - quite possibly the worst idea after a few beers, but I walked out with only a charm for my Pandora bracelet. Hooray!
This year, as I said, we'll be heading back to San Francisco to stay with our friend again for a few days before we all head to LA. Our friend mentioned biking across Golden Gate and possibly taking us to Napa (wooohoo!) but I'm going to try and convince him to take us to Alcatraz - stay tuned!
I need to get to work on the perfect pouty-lipped puppy dog face!
